The legend of the 12 animals of the Chinese calendar. Characteristics of 12 signs: properties, time, direction, month

In Chinese literature there are many legends and stories about the 12 animals of the calendar and Chinese zodiac , and they also explain why they are placed in this order.

One of them says that Huang Di, who is considered the ancestor of the Chinese nation, wanted to choose 12 guards for himself . Many animals fought for this right. For example, since the time when the Rat forgot to convey to the emperor the Cat’s request to be included in the detachment of guards, there has been enmity between them, and the Cat is not in the Chinese zodiac calendar. The Rat also proved itself by climbing into the Elephant’s trunk and he refused to participate in the competition for the right to be Huang Di’s guard. It turned out that the Rat turned out to be the most cunning. Although the Ox was the first, the Rat climbed onto his back and was the first. Since then, the calendar cycle begins with the sign of the Rat. The pig, which began to resent the order, was placed at the very end of the squad. To appease the Tiger and Dragon, who did not win, the titles of "Lord of the Forest" and "Lord of the Sea" were bestowed and they were placed at the front of the line after the Rat and the Ox. But here the Rabbit was offended. He won the match against the Dragon and was placed after the Tiger and in front of the Dragon. The Pig was paired at the end of the list with the Dog, who bit the Rabbit and was punished for it. All other animals also received their places as a result of fierce competition.

Another version of the order of the animals of the Chinese calendar says that the order was established depending on the time of activity of each of the animals. In ancient China, the day was divided into 12 hours and each animal was given 2 hours. They are also called “earthly branches” and are used in Chinese astrology Ba Zi.

  • time from 11 to 1 am (3rd watch) – the period of rat activity;
  • from 1 to 3 am (4 watches) the bull chews the cud;
  • from 3 to 5 am (5 watches) a formidable tiger walks;
  • from 5 to 7 am, when the sun has not yet risen, the legendary jade hare prepares medicine “mao” on the moon;
  • from 7 to 9 am the dragon makes clouds and prepares rain;
  • from 9 am to 11 am the snake is active;
  • from 11 to 1 o'clock in the afternoon horses frolic;
  • from 1 to 3 o'clock in the afternoon - the juiciest grass for the ram;
  • from 3 to 5 o'clock is the most favorite time for monkeys;
  • from 5 to 7 pm the chickens go to bed;
  • from 7 to 9 pm (1 watch) the dog begins night guarding the house;
  • From 9 to 11 pm (2 watches) the pig enjoys his sleep.

Another version about the 12 animals of the Chinese calendar.

The choice of 12 animals of the Chinese calendar was not accidental. Some of them were closely connected with the lives of the people themselves, while others were believed to bring good luck.

Dog, Ox, Goat, Horse, Rooster and Pig are the 6 animals kept in Chinese households. A famous Chinese proverb says: “Six animals in the house means prosperity.” This is why these six animals were chosen.

The other six - Rat, Dragon, Tiger, Rabbit, Monkey and Snake - are animals much loved in Chinese culture.

An important concept in the teaching is Yin and Yang. Therefore, the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac are divided on this basis. And also 6 pairs of animals were formed, where the qualities of one were opposite to the qualities of the other. In this way, Yin-Yang harmony was achieved, which is fundamental in all teachings. There are also 12 animals used in the Chinese horoscope.

The Yin and Yang of animals is determined by the number of their claws (paws, hooves). Even is pure for Yin and odd is pure for Yang. The animals in the zodiac are arranged in an alternating Yin-Yang order.

Feng Shui Forecast for March 2022 – Month of the Water Rabbit

According to the Chinese calendar, March 2022 is the month of the Water Rabbit, which will begin on the 5th.

What have the Flying Stars prepared in March? What dates of the month should you be wary of? How to find the best sectors in the house in the month of the Rabbit? Read about this and much more in the Feng Shui forecast for March.

The month carries the energy of the Wood, so this is a time of growth and development, especially since the Yang Water of the Year of the Tiger supports the Rabbit, which opens the doors to spring.

In the Chinese calendar, March 5 is the start of the Jingzhe season - “Awakening of Insects” 惊蛰. Although it is believed that spring warmth comes with the beginning of the Jingzhe season, it comes gradually and the weather is very unstable. Therefore, it is important to follow the principle of “covering up in spring” (春捂), that is, do not rush to throw off warm clothes and actively support your body through walks, good sleep and rest.

Water Rabbit is a combination of two characters for Yin Water 癸 and Rabbit 卯. The symbol of Yin Water is drops of water, rain or fog, and the Rabbit, or rather the Yin tree, is a flower or bush, flexible, able to change to adapt to different circumstances.

If you were born on the day or year of Yin 癸 or Yang water 壬, then the Rabbit 卯 is a Noble person . See the calculator.

This means that in March 2022 you will more often meet good, helpful people who are ready to help, regardless of whether you are currently in a period of good luck or bad luck. For example, your projects and ideas conceived in February may develop.

If you were born in the year of the Tiger 寅, Horse 午 or Dog 戌, then in the month of the Rabbit you will feel that you have become more charming and attractive to other people. See the calculator.

In the month of the Rabbit, caution will be required for those who have a Rat 子 in their birth chart, or a Rabbit 卯 with a Rat 子, since the meeting of these two signs forms a “punishment of dislike.”

If this is the case, as indicated above, then you will need special attention to emotions and new acquaintances, as well as a careful and attentive attitude in existing couples.

Please note: in the Chinese calendar, the year begins in early February, so I recommend calculating your Chinese horoscope to know for sure, see the calculator.

In March 2022, if you were born in the year of the Rooster, I recommend carrying a figurine or image of a Dog , this will help harmonize the energies of the month of the Rabbit for you.

The motto of March 2022 could be a quote from Lao Tzu from the Tao Te Ching:

“Even a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.”

How are biorhythms and patron animals connected?

In fact, there is no mysticism in dividing the time of day according to patron animals. The human body obeys biorhythms. In the East, much attention was paid to their study, although the term itself appeared much later. The ancients found their definitions for the phenomena, simple and understandable even for uneducated peasants.

It was noticed that at certain periods of the day people are possessed by the same desires, quite clearly expressed. Followers of the teachings of Feng Shui found for each such time period the corresponding types in the animal world, real and mythical.

For simplicity, we took the same animals that patronize the Chinese horoscope - there are twelve of them. Accordingly, the day is divided into a dozen equal intervals of 120 minutes: animal hours in Feng Shui philosophy last twice as long as usual.

FEATURES OF DIFFERENT WATCHES ACCORDING TO FENG SHUI

Did you know that it is quite possible to choose the perfect date for doing something based on your own and general date selection tools, but not achieve a positive result? This happens due to the incorrectly chosen hour.

And, on the contrary, almost every day there are watches that can give a person additional luck. Different types of forecasting practices, whatever they may be, pay special attention to the selection of positive hours no less than the selection of favorable days.

If you are also interested in improving your life, read the information about choosing the time in which absolutely all your endeavors and expectations will be crowned with success. During such hours, you receive a portion of additional support from the Universe, which contributes to a more active realization of what you want.

Big Year, Era, Cycle, Generation, Epoch

In addition to the above components of the traditional Chinese calendar (year, month, day and hour), such elements as the Great Year, Era, Cycle, Generation and Epoch should also be mentioned.

The Big Year is a period during which all 12 Earthly branches change. It contains 12 ordinary years.

An era is a period during which all possible combinations of Heavenly Trunks and Earthly Branches are replaced. An era contains 60 ordinary years or 5 Great Years.

The cycle consists of 3 eras, i.e. it contains 180 ordinary years. The eras in the cycle are called Upper (1st), Middle (2nd) and Lower (3rd).

Each cycle, in addition, is divided into 9 Generations of 20 years.

An era contains 20 Cycles, or 60 Eras, or 3600 ordinary years. Since the reign of the Yellow Emperor, only one Age has passed, and now the second is underway. The current Lower Era (18th in the second Age) and the current Cycle began in 1984.

Now that the structure of the traditional Chinese calendar has been briefly outlined above, we can move on to the essence of the problem. Namely, which date in this calendar should be considered the starting date.

Patterns of lunar and solar eclipses

The beginnings of the lunar and solar months almost never coincide. But in the overwhelming majority of cases, the lunar month marks either the beginning and the middle of the solar month, or only the middle. The same lunar months that only have the beginning of the solar month (without a middle) are called intercalary months (jun in Chinese). Their serial numbers are not fixed. Lunar years in which intercalary lunar months fall will contain not 12, but 13 lunar months.

It should be noted that the number and serial numbers of 13-month lunar years, as well as the serial numbers of intercalary lunar months, are not arbitrary. They, like, by the way, the number and order of lunar and solar eclipses, obey a certain pattern determined by the 19-year cycle of the Moon’s revolution around the Earth (the so-called Metonic cycle).

The annual calculation in the Chinese calendar is “Jupiter”. The fact is that the period of Jupiter’s revolution around the Sun is 11 years, 314 days, 19 hours and 12 minutes, that is, approximately 12 years. Jupiter stays in each sign of the Zodiac for approximately 1 year. Therefore, the creators of the Chinese calendar considered it appropriate to count the years in accordance with the cycle of Jupiter’s movement across the starry sky.

At the same time, the Chinese calendar also took into account the revolution cycle of another planet visible to the naked eye - Saturn. The period of Saturn's revolution around the Sun is 29 years, 168 days and 22 minutes. That is, in approximately 2 revolutions of Saturn around the Sun, Jupiter makes 60 revolutions. This is how the 60-year Chinese calendar cycle arose.
